The Rockwood Airport Grass Landing Area (AGLA) also known as “Smuggler’s Landing”, is located along the southeast side of the paved runway, 4/22. Turf operations are permitted in this designated area which is approximately 50 feet wide x 2,500 feet long, outlined with white and yellow cones. The AGLA is an unofficial area that is not regulated, inspected or approved by the FAA or any state aviation authority, and users are solely responsible for determining the suitability of the AGLA for their own operations.
The AGLA and the paved runway together constitute a single runway operating area. No aircraft may take off from or land or taxi on either the AGLA or the paved runway unless both runway surfaces are clear of all aircraft.
Landing on the AGLA
The use of radios on the CTAF (122.8) is strongly recommended. Pilots with radios should declare their intention to land on the AGLA. After landing, pilots should complete a thorough visual check of ground and air traffic before crossing the paved runway and should taxi across the paved runway as expeditiously as is practical. Pilots with radios should declare their intention to taxi across the paved surface to the AGLA. To the extent possible, runups and other preparations should be completed before crossing the hold line so that the aircraft may take off as soon as is practical after reaching the AGLA.

For decades, Rockwood Airport was a destination for middle-of-the-night nefarious shipments from South America. While those deliveries have thankfully come to a full-stop, the tales of illicit aviators flying in and out of RKW are legendary. Smuggler’s Landing turf strip was named after them, the pilots who flew the unconventional, unknown, and uncharted routes that brought fame AND misfortune.
Big things are landing soon at RKW - our new airplane rebuilding shop will specialize in repairs, rebuilds, modifications, and maintenance for rugged backcountry flying. From structural repairs, custom interiors and paint to expert fabric work, we’re bringing craftsmanship and performance together.

We're working with a bunch of passionate backcountry aviators to develop a whole new network of grass landing strips across beautiful East Tennessee. While this effort is separate from Rockwood Aviation, our organization is excited to support the project and help it become one of the best in America.
