Rockwood Backcountry Repair Center, part of Rockwood Aviation at Rockwood Municipal Airport (RKW), is hiring an entry-level Aircraft Maintenance Assistant. No aviation experience is required — this role is designed to build a career in aircraft maintenance. You’ll work alongside our A&P mechanics, learning the trade hands-on, with room to grow into specialty shop work (fabric covering, welding/fabrication) or toward your own A&P certificate as the shop expands.
WORK ETHIC WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- You’ll be joining an energetic, entrepreneurial and passionate team focused on world-class service and customer experience - we are all about general aviation, personal aviation and hands on with airplanes.
- Standard Operating procedures, detailed work instructions, engineering drawings and conformity to FAA quality requirements define our work.
- Variation in projects and daily work are the norm - you will find the next task instead of waiting to be handed one. Slower times means the shop gets cleaned or organized - the way its left after every shift.
- You are part of shop team - that collectively takes ownership of the entire shop’s work, not just your own checklist.
- You want to learn — you ask questions, watch closely, and look for ways to help and support the shop’s goals and objectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist A&P mechanics with parts cleaning, preparation, disassembly, and reassembly.
- Where applicable, read and apply work instructions from OEM-approved maintenance manuals, service bulletins, airworthiness directives, and other approved technical data.
- Stage and ensure correct tools and parts are available for each job.
- Stock and organize parts inventory and shop shelves.
- Clean and prepare finished projects, tools, and work areas.
- Learn to read and interpret technical manuals, maintenance records, and work orders.
- Help maintain accurate, complete documentation of maintenance activities.
- Support general shop upkeep, organization, and housekeeping.
- Take on additional shop tasks and responsibility as skills develop.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- No prior aviation experience required — mechanical aptitude, a positive attitude and willingness to learn are what matter most.
- Some mechanical experience and a basic personal tool set are a plus, not required.
- Comfortable following written and verbal instructions closely.
- Strong attention to detail.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must pass drug/alcohol screening and be eligible to work in the U.S.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Good general physical fitness; regular lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Potentially extended periods of standing, bending, kneeling, and working in tight spaces.
- Primarily indoor hangar/shop environment; some exposure to solvents, noise, and fumes.
- Weekday day shift.
GROWTH PATH
Strong performers can grow into specialty shop roles e.g. fabric covering, welding/fabrication; or pursue A&P certification with company support.
