Rockwood Backcountry Repair Center, part of Rockwood Aviation at Rockwood Municipal Airport (RKW), is hiring a certified Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic.
This is a hands-on maintenance role with duties and assignments including inspection, troubleshooting and repair of general aviation aircraft, with particular emphasis on backcountry, tailwheel, ‘tube and fabric’ and experimental airplanes. You’ll work directly with customers and on their aircraft in a growing repair station — with real individual ownership of the work but without many of the constraints that can come from larger aviation shop ‘maintenance-department bureaucracy’.
WORK ETHIC WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- You’ll be joining an energetic, entrepreneurial and passionate team focused on world-class service and customer experience - we are all about general aviation, personal aviation and hands on with airplanes.
- Standard Operating procedures, detailed work instructions, engineering drawings and conformity to FAA quality requirements define our work.
- Variation in projects and daily work are the norm - you will find the next task instead of waiting to be handed one. Slower times means the shop gets cleaned or organized - the way its left after every shift.
- You are part of shop team - that collectively takes ownership of the entire shop’s work, not just your own checklist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair aircraft structures, systems, and powerplants — airframe, landing gear, brakes, propeller, engine, and related mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Perform annual, 100-hour and condition inspections in accordance with FAA regulations and manufacturer data.
- Diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate repair, overhaul, or part replacement.
- Read and apply work instructions from OEM-approved maintenance manuals, service bulletins, airworthiness directives, and other approved technical data.
- Complete and maintain accurate maintenance records, logbook entries, and work order documentation per FAA and Repair Station Manual requirements.
- Order, receive, and track parts, materials and shop supplies needed for repairs.
- Communicate findings and recommended repairs clearly to aircraft owners, flight operations personnel and pilots.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe and professional shop and work area at all times.
- Direct/mentor the shop assistant on applicable tasks as the team grows.
- Follow all Repair Station Manual procedures and company/FAA safety and quality protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- Current FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) certificate — required.
- Inspection Authorization (IA) — preferred, not required.
- 2+ years of aircraft maintenance experience preferred; strong recent A&P graduates will be considered.
- Own a standard set of A&P hand tools.
- Experience with piston general aviation aircraft; backcountry, tailwheel, or experimental exposure a plus.
- Strong technical reading, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must pass drug/alcohol screening and background check, and be eligible to work in the U.S.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Regular lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; and lifting up to 75 lbs; frequent bending, kneeling, and climbing on aircraft.
- Primarily heated hangar/shop environment with occasional outdoor work.
- Exposure to engine noise, exhaust fumes, and fuel/solvent vapors.
- Weekday day shift; occasional evenings or weekends as workload and schedules require.
